Christmas shopping at goodwill??

Is it to taboo to do christmas shopping at goodwill when your on a tight, extremely tight budget? my fiance and I just moved in together and are working on getting married and having a baby so money is really tight and I dont want to go over board on spending for Christmas shopping this year, would it be wrong of us to be thrifty at this time of the year??

Christmas shopping at goodwill??
No, there's nothing wrong with trying to save some money...Goodwill %26amp; many other thrift stores have some really good stuff if you look...and yes, you can find a lot of great antiques and such at them...I wish you the best and Merry Christmas...
Reply:show some character.

it's okay to skip christmas if you can't afford it.

i haven't bought a single steak this month, because, well... it's not in the budget.
Reply:I could never bring myself to do it. There are bargains all over the place where you can do your Christmas shopping on a tight budget.
Reply:I think that you might just find the right thing for all your Christmas list. The old adage about the "It is the thought that counts!" is true here too.

You will be careful to choose something that the person will like and use. You will be cautious to make certain that it doesn't look "shop-worn" so....I say... go for it!!

And at the same time, you are supporting the Goodwill folks(always a good thing) and recycling(good for our planet!)

So!

Yes! Yes! and Yes!
Reply:Do it. The month of Dec is the best time to shop at Goodwill. People who get Christmas presents they don't want will just give it to Goodwill. Also, a lot of people donate to get the receipt for their taxes before the end of the year. My friend worked at Goodwill for a few years and has seen all kinds of brand new items come in. I've bought CDs and DVDs still in the plastic, a TV that looked like brand new (with a remote), clothes with the tags still on them.
Reply:Not at all. Always keep to your budget. If you go overboard, they will only think you can afford it. They won't know your situation.
Reply:That is a great idea. This year, I decided to travel to see my friend in another state at Christmas. I told everyone I would not be spending a lot on Christmas. My family was so understanding and said, "don't get us anything." I told them I WAS getting them something. I am going to bring back gifts from another state that they would not be able to get where we live. There won't be elaborate gifts but I will have fun with it. You can have fun with it too. The goodwill is a great place to go.
Reply:I think it would be better just to tell your relatives that money is tight and you will not be giving presents this year....or give homemade cookies, etc. but don't buy at goodwill.
Reply:It is not taboo and anyone else who tells you otherwise is narrow-minded and stupid. Whatever happened to the old adage: "It's the thought that counts"? I have never Christmas-shopped at Goodwill but that's because of reasons different from yours. They do carry brand new items and like-new items; you just have to have a keen eye for the stuff. Not everything that goes in the store is ratty. They have a "quality control" thing going on and yeah, sometimes bad things still end up on the floor but that shouldn't stop you from going there altogether. And the stories about all of the items not being clean is bull. You could just as easily catch whatever it is people are claiming you could catch from Goodwill stores at the mall. Plus, there are plenty of wealthy people who donate to Goodwill so you could very well end up with a nice item. If you're on a tight budget, do not let anyone stop you from doing what you have to do in order to keep that from worsening. Money is hard to come by nowadays and your loved ones and friends should be more than happy that you got them presents. They don't have to know where they came from, just as long as they came from the heart.

ETA: Goddess of Laundry beat me to the whole adage thing, hehe. But anyway, I hope you get the idea! Oh, and Goodwill isn't your only option. There are plenty of good sales going on at the mall, at plazas, everywhere. They've got $50 shoes going at $5 at some boutique stores over here, so you might want to try your luck where you're at.
Reply:Go for it. They even have gift cars now. hahaha
Reply:good will stores are great! I even take things left out side the box's when someone is too lazy to put them in the box. Besides that i clean them up and give them away to needy people.
Reply:There is nothing wrong with being thrifty just make sure what you buy is in excellent condition. A lot of times you can find some really good stuff that looks brand new at Good Wills and Salvation Army stores.
Reply:I'd say don't buy at Goodwill for a different reason. If you can find another thrift or consignment shop, go for it. But the money you give Goodwill doesn't go where it's supposed to. If you don't care about that, then go ahead and shop there, wisely...you CAN find some awesome stuff there, if it hasn't all been bought or stolen by the employees. It also really depends where the Goodwill is located too, how awesome and in good shape the stuff is....
Reply:I think that maybe instead of Goodwill you should try to make something for people you love. It is cheap and means more than a nasty old pair of jeans. Maybe make a nice scrapbook for someone with pics of you and that person.. or some tie blankets... or maybe just bake a whole bunch of goodies. These things show that you are spending time on the person...
