Online shopping a greener option ?

hi do you think that shopping on line is better than shopping on foot

Online shopping a greener option ?
Yes, because you save gas, less chance of an accident, and you probably save money because you don't buy other things you don't need.
Reply:no

because the individual item(s) have to shipped directly to your door. Each supplier may use a different carrier, that carrier may well have to do a lot of miles to deliver your parcel. Each item/parcel will have to be individually wrapped and packaged to survive the trip

Modern retailing logistics is pretty efficient, they deliver bulk loads from central warehouses to individual outlets. so there isn't a lot of wasted fuel in the delivery chain, there is little or no one way packaging used in logistics, most deliveries are made in pallets or cages.. CO2 per mile per item will be dramatically less than a parcels delivery van.

Mind you it depending on where you live, how you get to the shop. if your shopping trip involves transport (public or private.. its irrelevant) then the scales may tip the other way.. it may be 'greener' to buy over the net.

but you don't define greener..... a wonderful adjective with many meaning to many people. So Im assuming you mean in terms of carbon footprint
Reply:Greener for your pocket maybe but not for carbon footprint.

The product still has to get to your door and i don't think Mr Argos will walk on foot on carry them to you
Reply:no because you're using electricity whilst being online. Then there's the shipping which will cause environmental damage, and then there's all the packaging, most of which is usually non-recyclable.
